What is a dead key on a keyboard?

A dead key is a special kind of a modifier key on a mechanical typewriter, or computer keyboard, that is typically used to attach a specific diacritic to a base letter. The dead key does not generate a (complete) character by itself, but modifies the character generated by the key struck immediately after.

In this regard, how do I make my keyboard work again?

If your keyboard is not working, try the following steps:
  1. Shut down the computer and restart.
  2. Press the Esc key repeatedly to see if the Startup Menu screen displays.
  3. If the Startup Menu screen opens, press the F10 key to open the BIOS settings.
  4. Restart the computer.
  5. Click Start , then click Control Panel.
