Your fax number is the number of the phone line connected to the fax. With a fax machine or computer running fax software, the fax number is the phone number of the attached phone line. Calling the toll-free number 1-800-444-4444 (operated by MCI) will tell you the line's phone number.
These calls are 9 to 10 digits. To dial the fax number from the U.S. or Canada, dial the international exit code '011', then the U.K.'s country code of '44', then the area code (do not include the leading '0'), then the local phone number. This is a total of 13 to 14 digits.
A Fax is a document that is transmitted electronically over a telephone line. Faxes can be sent from and to any telephone number. They do not require a special line. You trace a fax number the same way you trace any other phone number.
To send a fax successfully to the UK, you must enter the required international dialing codes in addition to the local fax number. Check that your fax is able to dial internationally. Your business or home telecommunications plan may not include international calls. Dial "011", followed by the numbers "44".

All international faxing requires a code to dial internationally, a country code, and then the fax number you are dialing to (in that order). If you are dialing from a home or small office without a switchboard, then there is no need to enter a dial out code.
The country code (the number 1 for US phones and fax numbers) will also sometimes need to be dialed before local numbers but only when the area code is also required. The country code is almost always necessary to dial long distance numbers. You will often also need to dial 9 before dialing long distance numbers.
