Can you go on the Internet without a router?

Wireless Router (in-built Modem) has to be set manually using the settings provided by the ISP. And to answer your question; yes you cannot connect to your internet without a modem or an ADSL wireless router. Laptops may still have built-in DIAL-UP modems but not broadband.

Consequently, do you only need a router for WiFi?

Of course if you want to use WiFi to get internet access then you need an internet provider, plus a combined WiFi access point and router. But this network can only access internet if you connect your router to a ISP cable connection. Otherwise, you will have a WiFi network with no connection to Internet.

What is the difference between a WiFi router and a modem?

In order for devices on the network to connect to the Internet, the router must be connected to a modem. Therefore, most routers have a specific Ethernet port that is designed to connect to the Ethernet port of a cable or DSL modem. A modem is a device that provides access to the Internet (see below).
